Cash App offers a Visa debit card to all users that can be used to checkout at restaurants and stores that accept Visa cards. As long as you have enough funds in your Cash App account, you should be able to make a payment in any store with your card.
However, not every Cash All user has access to the Cash App card. To have an idea of how many people may not have a debit card, Cash App has around 36 million active users, but only 7 million of them have a Cash App card.
If a Cash App card is the only way to pay at a store, that effectively disqualifies at least 29 million people from being able to checkout with funds in their Cash App account, and that’s not counting the number of people with damaged or misplaced cards.
Fortunately, some workarounds make it possible to pay with Cash App without holding a Cash App card. Since there are many different ways to go about it, you may want to read this post to the end since most stores will only offer one option.
Can You Pay with Cash App in Store without Card?
Thanks to the Covid-19 pandemic that forced everyone to adopt contactless operations, payment processors like Cash App innovated new ways for stores to accept payments without you having to swipe a card or enter your PIN manually.
It’s possible to pay with the Cash App in-store without a card by scanning a QR code. You can also link your Cash App account to your Google Pay account as a funding source and pay at stores that support Google Pay. If you prefer Apple, there’s also Apple Pay that lets you link debit cards, and it also works in numerous stores across the country.
However, the last two options suggested in the paragraph above are only feasible if you have a Cash App card, but are not handy. If you don’t have a Cash App card, there’s nothing you’ll add to Google Pay or Apple Pay, and I’m not sure there’s a way to add Cash App to either without a debit card.
In the following section, we’ll take a look at each of the options mentioned above in detail. Firstly, I’ll show you how to scan a QR code on Cash App to pay for goods after purchasing them. Then, you’ll learn how to link your Cash App card to your Google Pay and Apple Pay accounts respectively to fund them, so you can buy stuff without swiping a card.
How to Pay with Cash App in Store without Card
As explained earlier, there are three ways to pay with Cash App in a store without having a Cash App card. Firstly, you can scan a QR code using the scanner on your app to pay from your balance or your linked bank account, or both.
Here’s how to pay using each of the methods above in detail.
- Scanning a QR code
Perhaps the most popular option of the three available ones is having the store generate a QR code that you can scan to pay the exact price of the goods you purchased. When the store offers you a code to scan, you don’t have to indicate how much you intend to pay or anything; it’s just as convenient as swiping a card.
The QR code scanning feature on Cash App works simply: the merchant generates a personalized code based on the price of your cart. You scan the code using your phone’s QR code scanner and authenticate the transaction to pay that exact amount.
To scan a QR code using Cash App, you’ll have to sign in to the app on your mobile phone. From there, you can head over to your profile by tapping your profile picture at the top right. On the profile page, you’ll see a QR code icon that you can tap to display the QR code to your profile.
Under that code, you’ll see a scan button that lets you scan the QR code you got from the store to pay. Cash App will load up a camera as soon as you press the scan button, and the entire process of scanning the code should be done in under a second.

- Adding Cash App to Google Pay or Apple Pay
From the preceding section, you’ll notice that adding your account to Google Pay and Apple Pay are the two other options you can try if scanning a code is out of the question. That way, you can pay at any store that accepts Google Pay or Apple Pay payments without needing any Cash App cards.
One downside of using this method is that you technically need a Cash App card for it to work. However, the reason why it appears in this article is that you can always make a payment at any store that accepts either mode of payment once you’ve linked it for the first time, so it qualifies.
To add Cash App to either Google Pay or Apple Pay, you’ll have to open the respective apps and attempt to add a new debit card as a funding source. When you do that, you may need to enter some details about your card; in this step, enter details about your Cash App card all through.
Complete any required verification and you’ll be allowed to add the card to your Apple Pay or Google Pay account. After doing that, you can pay at any restaurant or store that accepts Google Pay payments in the United States.
Gone are the days when you needed to pull out a card to pay for anything you purchased from a store. Today, you can simply open an app on your smartphone, pull up a camera, scan a random code, enter your PIN, and ta-da!
In this article, I’ve shown you two (three) different ways to pay with the Cash App in-store without a card. If you have a Cash Card, however, always try to bring it along when going shopping because you just can never know.
